- The magnetic tape is composed of 2
main parts :
- The Base Film,
- The Magnetic Layer
The base
film, made of Polyester (PET Poly Ethylen Theraphtalate),
is a thin substrate onto which the magnetic layer is
applied. This magnetic layer consists of magnetic paint
which contains magnetic powder, binding, abrasive,
hardening and lubricating agents. |

A third layer is
also added in the majority of formats : The Back Coating.
Thanks to a special surface treatment composed of strong
materials, this back coating (made of titanium, carbon,
binders etc…) can insure 2 main functions :
1- Base
film conservation against tape guide scratches during the
VTR running,
2- The decrease of static charges accumulated
during the VTR running mode. This back coating will
improve the tape runnabilty and reliability compared to a
tape which is not back coated. |

The
MP Tape Process:
The MP Tape process can be split into 4 main processes
which are :
- The Mixing,
- The Coating,
- The Calendering,
-And the Slitting.
Hereunder a
schematic diagram of the Mixing and Coating processes.
